The purpose of this project was to create two illustrative surface designs for the new “California Vibes” patio collection at Hudson’s Bay for Spring/Summer 2021, to be used on throw patio cushions. I was tasked with creating two different illustrations that would be bright, vibrant, and be reminiscent of bohemian California beach vibes. The key themes and motifs we wanted to use for this collection included palm trees, surfing, water, and the iconic, vintage Volkswagen van.

It was challenging to create a design that was close enough to our reference and inspiration images, while maintaining a certain level of detail, and in doing so, only using a very limited colour palette which was bright, yet tonal. Additionally, This was my first experience creating surface design artwork, and due to the printing process involved, the vendor required the artwork files to be prepared as a layered TIFF, which I had never done before, so it was a learning opportunity for me.
